Aishwarya Rai: The 'beauty' of her success

She has been part of films by such illustrious directors such as Mani Ratnam, Paul Mayeda Berges, Rituparno Ghosh, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Gurinder Chaddha, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but critics still say she can't really act, and is not much more than an ornamental element in their films!

Is she plain lucky, or does Aishwarya choose her roles well? She has definitely done interesting and strong roles, roles that any actor worth her mettle would kill to do.

Every time Aishwarya does one of these very interesting roles, we wonder, if another actor could have done it more convincingly.

Lets start with her role in Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj. We'd think she acted better than she normally does - by maybe not acting too much and remaining her own self in most scenes. Ramu probably figured that's the way to make it work with Aishwarya. Just keep things simple, don't ask her to emote too much or show too many expressions.

She still did a very decent job in the film, she was restrained, did not over act, and looked every bit like a tycoon's daughter.

But did she add anything extra? Does any character gain anything extra if it's played by her?

Well, the character becomes beautiful by leaps and bounds, but depth of personality, spontaneity, layers of emotions, sometimes just saying it with a touch or a look in the eye... well, that does not happen when Aishwarya plays a character.

Jodhaa Akbar was Ashutosh's dream project. We know how much attention he pays to detail, he knew what he was doing when he chose Aishwarya to play the role of Jodhaa. Aishwarya as the Rajput queen of Akbar looks beautiful and also fits the role. The chemistry between Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya was marvelous in the movie, and that contributed greatly to the success of the movie. This was the second time that they have been paired together after the tremendous success of Dhoom 2.

One gets the feeling that 'technically' she fits every role that she is taken up for, but somewhere in the performance she falls short, and so her roles don't really become memorable roles of cinema. Visually she fits the image of a queen, she has the physical attributes; the emotional quotient falls short.

Another interesting film starring Aishwarya is Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked. The film is based on the true story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia who has to move to London after marriage and then deal with physical and mental abuse by her husband. She tolerates it for ten years and one day something snaps inside her and she sets him on fire. She is sent to prison and strangely finds her freedom and salvation there. Her case is taken up by an NGO that fights domestic violence against women and after three and half years in prison she is set free. This role gave her tremendous room to grow as an actor.

Jagmohan Mundhra has said that a lot of good actors could have played the role of Kiranjeet, but none would have made the film as popular and talked about as Aishwarya did. He feels she is a brand name, who can make a film interesting internationally.

One film we truly liked Aishwarya's performance in is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Maybe that is what a great director can do; transform a sprightly young girl in the beginning of the story to a demure, somber married woman by the end of it. We don't think her talent has been used better by any other director; maybe by Mani Ratnam in Guru, but even that performance was not comparable to the one in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Not surprisingly, she won the Best Actress Award for Devdas, another Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

We can't yet deny that Aishwarya adds a lot of interest value to a film project. There must be so many people in our country and maybe even abroad who just can't take their eyes off her and so have to come and watch her movie.

Her addition to the cast of any film generates a lot of media buzz. So, end of the day, Aishwarya is a highly saleable actor in the industry. And that is really what matters here.

Her film has to sell, the distributors won't blink an eye-lid before buying a film which features her. So, we have to grudgingly admit, Aishwarya does rule the industry.

For all those other amazing actors who get side-lined by her, well, the world loves a beautiful thing. And Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is beautiful, the whole world admits to that!

Her becoming a part of the most illustrious family in the industry only adds to her image and her supreme position.

In the 1994 Miss India contest, she was placed second behind Sushmita Sen, and went on to win the Miss World title that same year and the Miss Photogenic award. After the one year reign as Miss World in London, she then worked as a professional model, in advertising and Indian fashion magazines and later got into Indian film industry.

After much speculation concerning their relationship, her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan was announced on January 14, 2007. The event was heavily covered by the media. They married on April 20, 2007 in a private ceremony held at the Bachchans' bungalow Prateeksha

Career

Aishwarya debuted in Mani Ratnam's Tamil language film, Iruvar (1997) with Mohanlal. She was introduced to Bollywood in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya; the film did not do well at the box office. However, her third project, a Tamil-language film, Jeans (1998) by S. Shankar was a critical and commercial success for which she was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award South. Aishwarya then appeared in many Bollywood films; a few successful films of her career include Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Taal (1999) for which her performance was lauded. She was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in the former. In 2000 she had a supporting role in the hit film Mohabbatein and also in another hit film Josh.

In 2002, Rai appeared with superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lavishly produced Devdas, which was a major box-office success and earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. It was during this time that she garnered the attention of the West as an Indian actress and went on to appear in a few Hollywood projects.

As her name gained popularity in the West, she was chosen by Time magazine in 2004 as one of the World's "100 Most Influential People" and in 2003, appeared on the cover of Time magazine. She was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on January 2. A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. She was also featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment. In 2003, she acted in the critically acclaimed and commercial success Bengali film, Chokher Bali, an adaptation of one of Rabindranath Tagore's novels by the same name.

Rai has been a regular at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002, and was a member of the Jury at Cannes in the year 2003. In October 2004, a wax figure of Rai became on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The same month, her first foreign film was released: Bride and Prejudice. The film was an Indian version of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. The film did well commercially in the U.K but not in India. Her next overseas venture, The Mistress of Spices, was critically acclaimed though not commercially successful. She then appeared at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in New Delhi.

In between her overseas acting stints, she appeared in the Indian film Bunty Aur Babli in a hugely popular seven minute dance sequence for the song "Kajra Re". The dance sequence paired Rai with Abhishek Bachchan who, two years later (April 2007), became her husband.

At the end of the year 2006, she had two releases: Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2. Umrao Jaan did poorly in India; however, her role in Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 hit movie Dhoom brought her great attention. It was a hit commercially too. Both of these films also co-starred Rai's soon-to-be husband, Abhishek Bachchan.

2007 saw the release of Mani Ratnam's Guru which premiered in Toronto. The film, based on the life of successful Indian businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, was both commercially and critically very successful. Her most recent film, Provoked, based on the book "Circle of Light" where she portrays a real life character, was released on 6 April, 2007 in India and the UK. The film did well commercially in the UK It was critically acclaimed all over the world. At the end of April 2007 her first American film, The Last Legion, was released in Russia and the Netherlands. The film is expected to open in North American theaters in August 2007.

Aishwarya Rai is to perform a dance ballet in Melbourne Commonwealth Games closing cermony later this month.

According to the news, Aishwarya Rai will be performing along with other Bollywood stars Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra.

900 strong performers from India will be participating in the cultural contingent at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

Singers Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Blaaze, choreographer Shiamak Davar, percussion maestros Taufiq Qureshi and Sivamani will give live performances in the cultural extravaganza planned and a tribute to Yoga by Actress and dancer Isha Sherwani.

Aishwarya Rai Dance will be the final event of the show.

Abhishek Bachchan, who celebrated his 30th birth day, was seen delighted with the presence of Aishwarya Rai.

The party at his house was attended by many Bollywood big names like Sanjay Dutt, Esha Deol, Bipasha Basu, John Abraham, Riteish Deshmukh, Karan Johar and colorful politician Amar Singh MP are among many others.

Aishwarya Rai was recieved by Abhishek himself in the entrance and he cut the chocolate cake holding sweet Aishs’ hand. Also he fed cakes to Aishwarya after Amitabh and Jaya.

They danced together for a while and Aishwarya stayed at Abhisheks’ house until wee hours.

On a side note, drunken erstwhile actor Hemant Birjee was punched by Sanjay Dutt for misbehaving in the party. Hermant was arrested last month for an alleged m*lesting a 24-year-old woman.
